Meditations on 611

Ok, everybody knows about 411 and 911. Those are information and emergency services, respectively. 611 is for repair services. Now back in the days of Ma Bell, you could call this number from anywhere to report a problem anywhere. After the breakup of ma bell and the advent of competing carriers, this is no longer the case. If your office line is provided by the same company as your home line, you can dial 611 to report it. If it isn't, however, you just wasted a call. Always call the support number provided by your carrier that is shown on your bill, then you can't go wrong. Also make sure you have the following information for the technician:

Your name
Account number
The phone number you are calling about
The address where the phone number is located

The more accurate information you can provide the technician, the faster they will be able to help you and the sooner the problem will be resolved.

Also, please don't waste time calling 611 from a payphone. Most of the time, the service provider this will connect you to is not the owner of the phone and it's like trying to teach a pig to sing: It frustrates you and annoys the pig.

Asta!
